Oracle Corporation er et amerikansk, børsnotert selskap som utvikler IT-verktøy for databaselagring, selskapsplanlegging (ERP) og systemer for kunderelasjonshåndtering (CRM). Hovedkvarteret er i Redwood City utenfor San Francisco. Grunnlegger og direktør er Larry Ellison.

Historikk

Selskapet ble grunnlagt i 1977 under navnet Software Development Laboratories (SDL), og har kontorer i 145 land, med i alt om lag 55 000 ansatte. Blant programvareselskap er bare Microsoft større (2008).

Børsnoteringen skjedde i 1986. Etter en langvarig strid tok Oracle kontroll over selskapet PeopleSoft i desember 2004. Året etter kjøpte Oracle også det tyske selskapet Siebel Systems for nesten 6 milliarder dollar. Og i januar 2008 annonserte Oracle at de kjøpte BEA Systems for om lag 7,2 mrd dollar.[8]

Selskapets viktigste produkt er Oracle Database, en SQL-basert, fleksibel databaseløsning. Den ble utviklet for PC på plattformen MS-DOS i 1984, og i 2006 utviklet Oracle sin første Oracle database for Linux, sammen med Red Hat.

Den viktigste konkurrenten er det tyske programvareselskapet SAP.
