Inndelt i

Odontomyia er en slekt av våpenfluer. Det er funnet 3 arter i Norge. I verden er det ca. 250 arter.

Utseende

Odontomyia er middelsstore, avlange, blankt svarte fluer. Grunnfargen er som oftest svart, men bakkroppen har gjerne gule eller grønne tegninger. Hodet er stort og bredt, antennene gjerne lengre enn hodet. Thorax er stor og bred, litt flat. Scutellum har noen skarpe pigger langs kanten. Vingene er glassklare eller litt røykfargede med markerte årer over hele vingeflaten, men sterkere ved forkanten. Bakkroppen er gjerne forholdsvis bred, oval. Navnet "våpenfluer" spiller gjerne på at bakkroppen hos disse artene kan minne om et våpenskjold. Disse artene minner overflatisk om blomsterfluer (Syrphidae).

Levevis

Våpenfluer flyr på varme solfylte dager, fra juni til september. Gjerne nær vann, på soleksponerte, tørre varme steder med blomster, ved kompost og lignende. Ofte kryper de rundt i vegetasjonen, framfor å fly. Mange arter tiltrekkes skjermplanter, de voksne lever av pollen og nektar.

Disse artene har stort sett larver som utvikler seg i ferskvann.
