Nils Nilsson Skum på Commons

Nils Nilsson Skum (1872–1951) var en svensk-samisk kunstner. Skum etterlot seg over 3000 tegninger, alle med motiv fra reindrift og tradisjonell samisk liv. Han arbeidet også med tradisjonelt samisk sløyd, som for eksempel kniver med mønstre og skulpturer.

Foreldrene hans, Nils Thomasson Skum og Margareta Nilsdotter, jobbet med rein, og Nils Nilsson ble født under flyttingen fra Kautokeino til Gällivare. Han selv arbeidet også for det meste med reindrift. Som kunstner var han helt selvlært. Fra 1893 var han gift med Helena Kuhmunen.

På 1930-tallet krympet reinflokken til Skum en god del etter noen vanskelige år ettersom mange rein døde av sult. Han slo seg da ned i Sjisjkasvare for å bli kunstner på heltid. Den han innredet et atelier med elektrisk lys fra sitt eget vindkraftverk. I 1937 ble bildene til Skum utstilte på verdensutstillingen i Paris. Etter dette ble bildene hans kjente for et større publikum. Året etterpå ble om lag hundre av tegningene hans utgitt i boken Sáme siida (Samebyen). Bildene ble forklart for dem som ikke er kjent med reindrift og samisk kultur.

Skum døde i Sjiska i Gällivare. Boken Ballet renar, som kom ut først etter at han var død, tar for seg tradisjonell reindrift i ord og bilde, slik Skum hadde opplevd det. Ernst Manker var redaktør for begge bøkene.

Mange av verka til Skum er i dag å finne på Nordiska museet i Stockholm, hos Gällivare kommune og hos LKAB i Kiruna.
