Natal på Commons

Natal var en britisk koloni i den østlige delen av dagens Sør-Afrika. Kolonien ble offisielt opprettet 4. mai 1843, etter at den britiske regjeringen hadde annektert boerrepublikken Natalia. Opprinnelig utgjorde kolonien Natal bare halvparten av dagens iKwaZulu-Natali. Det tidligere selvstendige kongedømmet Zululand ble føyet til kolonien i 1897.[2]

I 1910 gikk Natal sammen med Transvaal, Kappkolonien og Oranjefristaten og etablerte Sør-Afrika-unionen. Natalprovinsen var under folkeavstemningen om republikk i 1960 den eneste provinsen som stemte mot republikken. I 1994 fikk Natal dagens navn, iKwaZulu-Natali.

I 1882 reiste et skip norsk utavndrere til Natal og etablerte Marburg-settlementet. Gjennom Hans Schreuder hadde det en periode vært norsk misjonsvirksomhet i området. I hvalfangsttiden omkring 1910 var det et stort antall norske i Durban og en del av disse slo seg ned for godt.[3]
