Messier 100 på Commons

Messier 100 (også kjent som NGC 4321) er en spiralgalakse[4] i den sørlige delen av stjernebildet Berenikes hår. Galaksen er en av de mest lyssterke og største galaksene i Virgohopen, beliggende omtrent 55 millioner lysår[3] unna jorden, og har en diameter på 107 000&nbså;lysår. Den ble oppdaget av Pierre Méchain 5. mars 1781 og ble senere innlemme i Messierkatalogen over stjernetåker og stjernehoper[5] etter at Charles Messier[6] gjorde sine egne observasjoner 13. april 1781. Galaksen var en av de første spiralgalaksene[6] som ble oppdaget, og den ble listet som en av fjorten spiraltåker av William Parsons i 1850. To satellittgalakse[7][8] kalt NGC 4323 – forbundet med M100 av en bro av lyssterkt materie – og NGC 4328 finnes i denne galaksen.
