Medlidenhet

Medlidenhet eller medfølelse kan defineres som «opplevelse av sorg og nedtrykthet overfor et menneskes eller dyrs vanskeligheter eller lidelse.»[1]

Mens empati defineres som en intellektuell «evne til innlevelse»[1] eller til å forstå andres tilstand[2], beskrives medfølelse som en personlig respons på andres tilstand.[1]

Medfølelse er både en sosial norm[1][3] basert på altruisme[4] og en religiøs dyd i flere religioner.[5] Det er ofte forventet at medfølelse skal uttrykkes i praktisk omsorg.[6]
