Mark David Chapman på Commons

Mark David Chapman (født 1955) er en amerikansk person kjent for å ha myrdet musikeren John Lennon.

Han skjøt og drepte Lennon utenfor hans hjem i Dakota-bygningen i New York 8. desember 1980. Tidligere samme dag hadde Lennon, sammen med sin sønn Sean, signert LP-platen Double Fantasy for den tidligere fanatiske tilhengeren. Chapman ventet på Lennon i flere timer foran Dakota-bygningen, før han ankom boligkomplekset. Da Lennon steg ut av sin limousin og gikk mot leilighetskomplekset, avfyrte Chapman fem skudd, hvorav fire traff Lennon i ryggen. Yoko Ono, Lennons kone, hadde sekunder før gått inn i Dakota-bygget, og ble ikke truffet av skuddene. Lennon klarte å ta seg opp seks trappetrinn før han uttalte «I'm shot» til dørvakten. John Lennon ble erklært død 15 minutter etter han ankom sykehuset.

Mark Chapman hadde J.D. Salingers bok The Catcher in the Rye med seg den aktuelle natten. Etter drapet satte Chapman seg ned på fortauskanten og leste videre i boken. Det er antatt at Chapman egentlig hadde som intensjon å skrive et nytt kapittel i boken; det såkalte «Chapter 27» (siste kapittel i boken er det 26.), med Lennons blod. Chapman lot seg uten motstand bli påsatt håndjern og deretter ble han ført til politistasjonen.

Chapman ble tiltalt for overlagt drap og sa seg selv skyldig, selv om mange trodde han skulle hevde at han var sinnssyk i gjerningsøyeblikket. Han soner dommen i Attica Correctional Facility i nærheten av Buffalo, New York (september 2010). Han er blitt nektet prøveløslatelse 12 ganger siden han fikk muligheten til å søke i 2000.
