Mørkets hjerte

Mørkets hjerte (engelsk Heart of Darkness) er en roman skrevet av den polsk-britiske forfatteren Joseph Conrad, utgitt i 1902, publisert første gang som en tredelt serie i Blackwood's Magazine i 1899. Romanen er sterkt inspirert av Conrads erfaringer som kaptein på en elvebåt i Fristaten Kongo åtte år tidligere. Romanen har inspirert en lang rekke filmmakere, forfattere, musikere og andre kunstnere.

Orson Welles var den første som forsøkte å filmatisere boka, men ga opp på grunn av budsjettmessig uenighet med filmselskapet RKO Pictures. I 1979 kom Francis Ford Coppolas film Apokalypse nå!, hvor manuset er basert på Mørkets hjerte, men historien flyttet til Vietnamkrigen.

Kritikk for rasisme

Joseph Conrad har blitt karakterisert som rasist av den nigerianske forfatteren Chinua Achebe på grunn av måten han fremstilte afrikanere i Mørkets hjerte. Achebe påpeker at Conrad fremstiller afrikanere som «avhumaniserte og degraderte», og som primitive mennesker nærmest uten språk. Denne karakteristikken har imidlertid fått liten gjennomslag og konsensusen i litteraturforskningsmiljøene er at hans bok er en sterk kritikk av kolonialismen. Conrad skildrer europeernes fremferd og overgrep mot lokalbefolkningen på en måte som til da var svært sjeldent.[1]

Handling

Om bord på Nellie, ankret i Themsen i nærheten av Gravesend, forteller Charles Marlow en gruppe andre sjømenn hvordan han ble kaptein på en dampbåt. Som barn ble Marlow fascinert av "de tomme områdene" på kart, spesielt i Afrika. Et fotografi av en elv på kartet fascinerte ham spesielt. I tilbakeblikk finner Marlow veien til Afrika med en dampbåt. Han reiser 50 kilometer oppover elven hvor en stasjon ligger. Arbeidet med en jernbane pågår.

Marlow utforsker en smal kløft, og blir forferdet over å finne seg selv på et sted fullt av syke afrikanere som arbeidet på jernbanen og nå dør. Han får vite om en Mr. Kurtz, som har ansvaret for et veldig viktig handelssted, og skal være en respektert, førsteklasses agent. Marlow reiser sammen med flere andre menn for å reise til fots 320 kilometer til sentralstasjonen, for å finne en dampbåt. Etter femten dager ankommer de stasjonen bare for å høre at dampbåten allerede har blitt ødelagt i en ulykke. Marlow får båten ut av elven og bruker flere måneder på å reparere den. Marlow er frustrert over tiden det tar å gjennomføre alle reparasjonene, forsinket av mangel på verktøy og reserve-deler.
