Kirtan

Kirtan (hindi कीर्तन kīrtan, etter sanskrit कीर्तन kīrtana) er kjent innen hinduismen, sikhismen og i noen former for buddhismen, og i indisk jødedom. Den er en sørasiatisk devosjonell sangstil.

Innen hinduismen er den en tradisjonell indisk tilstelning med dans, musikk og sang, og forekommer mest i det nordlige Indis i bhakti-sammenheng. Kirtan er en form for tllstelning der gruppen sammen gjentar en leders mantra, eller hymne (hellig sang). Entingen er dette ved korte fraser i gangen, hentet fra en lengre hymne, eller korte mantra. Det lederen synger, gjentar deltagerne. Kirtan brukes iblant som synonym til bhajan, som også er noe som gjøres i grupper. Men bhajaen kan synges av en enkeltperson, mens kirtan ikke kan det.
