Hengeskap datert 1758 og skåret av Iver Gundersen Øvstrud. På døren finner vi Dyret med 7 hoder fra Johannes' åpenbaring[2], og på feltene har han øverst skåret Moses og stentavlene med de ti bud[3], Jakobs kamp,[4] og nederst finner vi Jakobs drøm[5] og Jesu dåp.[6] Foto Bjørg Disington, Norsk Folkemuseum, NF.1931-0350.

Iver Gundersen Øvstrud (født 1711, død 1775) var norsk treskjærer og rosemaler.

Han var født på gården Øvstrud i Rollag i Numedal. I 1753 giftet han seg med Anne Johannesdatter Bergerud, og i 1753 flyttet de fra Øvstrud til Herbrandsplassen i Veggli. De siste årene bodde han på husmannsplassen Toeneie i Veggli, der han døde i 1775.[7]

Øvstrud var trolig selvlært, men han har hentet inspirasjon fra kirkekunsten og var den første i Numedal som skar akantus.[8] Det er bevart noen få arbeider av Iver Øvstrud fra slutten av 1730-årene. I 1742 skar han en benk og i 1744 en almissetavle til Veggli kirke, og allerede i disse årene trer han fram med sin personlige stil der alle flater, sarger og listverk fylles med dekor - geometriske border, planter, dyr og mennesker. Øvstrud bruker mange bibelske motiver som han trolig har hentet fra bildebibler.[9] Han fremstår først og fremst som treskjærer, men han bruker også svidekor. Maling bruker han primært sammen med disse teknikkene, men det er bevart noen mindre gjenstander etter Øvstrud som bare er dekorert med malte blomster- eller figurmotiver.

Øvstrud har en mangfoldig produksjon av skap, benker, kister, skrin, kanner, mangletrær, høvrer, bogtrær og andre små gjenstander. I tillegg til benk og almissetavle til Veggli kirke og arbeider i Rollag stavkirke han har trolig skåret prekestolhimlingen i Svene kirke. Han er representert i samlingene i Bergen Museum, Drammens Museum, Lågdalsmuseet på Kongsberg, Nordiska museet i Stockholm[10] og Norsk Folkemuseum.

I 1958 ble det arrangert en stor utstilling av Øvstruds arbeider på Drammens Museum. Katalogen fra denne utstillingen omfatter 85 gjenstander som skal være gjort av Øvstrud og har et tillegg på 5 som er mer usikre.[11]
