Homaeotarsus er en slekt av biller som hører til familien kortvinger (Staphylinidae). De kan kjennes på lang og smal, mer eller mindre sylindrisk kroppsform og nokså kort bein. Disse billene lever på bakken der den smale kroppsformen hjelper dem å ta seg lett fram mellom løvstrø og røtter.
Utseende
Middelsstore (3 – 10 mm), slanke biller, mer eller mindre sylindrisk kroppsform. De fleste artene er mer eller mindre gul- eller brunaktige, men artene i slekten Paederus er mer fargerike i rødt og metallisk blått. Hodet er ganske stort, gjerne mer eller mindre firkantet, og skilt fra brystskjoldet (pronotum) ved en tydelig, smal "hals". Fasettøynene er vanligvis ganske små og antennene tynne. Antennene er festet under en "hylle" dannet av pannens fremkant. Brystskjoldet (pronotum) er gjerne lengre enn bredt, noen ganger smalere enn hodet. Dekkvingene er omtrent så lange som brystskjoldet, omtrent parallellsidige. Bakkroppen er lang og mer eller mindre sylindrisk, oftest kraftig punktert. Beina er vanligvis ganske korte, og, særlig hos den artsrike slekten Lathrobium, kraftige, tilpasset graving.
Levevis
Smalkortvingene er bakkelevende rovdyr som særlig finnes på litt fuktige steder. Artene i slekten Paederus flyr godt, enkelte andre arter har reduserte flygevinger og kan ikke fly.
