Happy Mondays på Commons

Happy Mondays er et engelsk alternativ rock-band fra Salford i Stor-Manchester. Det ble dannet i 1980 av Shaun Ryder, broren Paul Ryder, Mark Day (også kjent som «Moose» eller «Cowhead»), Paul Davis (også kjent som P.D) og Gary Whelan. Mark «Bez» Berry ble senere med i bandet på en konsert, og fungerte som danser/perkusjonist. Rowetta Satchell ble med i bandet tidlig i 1990-årene.

Den første offisielle utgivelsen fra Happy Mondays var Forty Five EP, ofte feilaktig kalt Delightful EP etter førstesporet. Den ble sluppet på Factory Records i 1985.

Det første albumet, Squirrel and G-Man Twenty Four Hour Party People Plastic Face Carnt Smile (White Out), kom i 1987, etterfulgt av Bummed i 1988, Pills 'n' Thrills and Bellyaches i 1990 og Yes Please! i 1992.

Bandet ble oppløst i 1993, hvorpå Ryder og Bez dannet Black Grape.[1] I 1999 ble Happy Mondays gjenforent, minus et par medlemmer, men ble oppløst igjen i 2000. Bandet var med i filmen 24 Hour Party People fra 2002, med Danny Cunningham som Shaun Ryder.

I 2004 ble Happy Mondays gjenforent, men denne gangen uten bassist Paul Ryder, som stod ved hans uttalelse fra oppløsningen i 1992 om at han aldri igjen ville jobbe med broren Shaun Ryder. I 2007 ga bandet med denne besetningen ut albumet Uncle Dysfunktional, som ble mottatt langt bedre enn bandets forrige utgivelse, Yes Please! Bandet ble oppløst igjen i 2010, men i 2012 stod bandet for første gang siden 1992 på scenen med sin originale besetning. Bandet gav i forbindelse med denne turneen ut albumet Happy Mondays – Live At Brixton Academy, som ble spilt inn under en konsert på Brixton Academy 5. mai samme år.

15. juli 2022 ble det kjent at Paul Ryder var død, 58 år gammel.[2]
