Giovanni Carlo Boschi (født 9. april 1715 i Faenza i Kirkestaten, død 6. september 1788 i Roma) var en kardinal i den katolske kirke.

Liv og virke

Bakgrunn

Boschi var født i av en adelig patrisierfamilie.[trenger referanse]

Han studerte sivil og kanonisk rett i Faenza og Roma. I 1740 publiserte han De apostolica B. Petri cathedra og In funere Caroli VI Romanurum regis . I 1744 var han kannik i Vatikanbasilikaen, og i 1745 mottok han de lavere vigsler.

Prest

Den 5. mars 1746 ble Boschi presteviet. Først var han konsulent ved Signatura apostolica, før pave Benedikt XIV i 1754 utnevnte ham til prefekt for Camera apostolica. I de påfølgende årene ble han tildelt flere oppgaver og titler av Benedikt XIV og hans etterfølger pave Klemens XIII, og i 1759 ble han prefekt for det apostoliske palass.

Titularerkebiskop

Den 22. september 1760 ble han utnevnt til titularerkebiskop av Athenae. Han ble bispeviet pave Klemens XIII den 5. oktober samme år. Medkonsekratorer var Lodovico Calini, patriark av Antiokia, og den senere kardinal Giovanni Antonio Bufalini. Samme år ble han pavelig tronassistent.

I konsistoriet den 21. juli 1766 kreerte pave Klemens XIII til kardinalprest med Santi Giovanni e Paolo som tittelkirke. Han ble medlem av flere kardinalskongregasjoner og i 1767 protektor av Det hellige land. Samme år utnevnte pave Klemens XIII ham. til storpønitentiar, og dette forble han til sin død. Kardinal Giovanni Carlo Boschi deltok på konklaven i 1769 som valgte pave Klemens XIV.

På denne tiden opptok jesuittspørsmålet kirken. Under press fra flere europeiske makter opphevet pave Klemens XIV jesuittordenen den 16. august 1773.[3] Boschi stod på jesuittordenens side, og det er grunnen til at Bourbon-herskerne i 1774 før konklaven 1774–1775 gjorde bruk av sin jus exclusivae og nedla veto mot hans eventuelle valg til pave.[trenger referanse]

På vegne av den nye paven Pius VI sensurerte han katekismene i Wien og i Milano i 1778, ettersom de avvek for meget fra Den romerske katekisme. I 1784 ble han tildelt tittelkirken San Lorenzo in Lucina.

Kardinal Boschi døde fire år senere og ble gravlagt i sin titularkirke. Vincenzo Zucchini publiserte en krønike om begravelsesmessen i Faenza i 1788.
