District of Columbia på Commons

District of Columbia (DC) er et av USAs 94 føderale distrikter og har sammenfallende grenser med byen Washington. Det er et av fem føderale distrikter som ikke dekker en delstat, og ble opprettet i 1790 i forbindelse med grunnleggelsen av Washington.

Grensene gjennom historien

Det dekker et landområde på 177 km² og hadde 689 545 innbyggere per 1. april 2020.[1] Distriktet støter til Virginia vest for elven Potomac, og er ellers omgitt av Maryland.

Distriktet utgjør en domskrets der førsteinstansdomstolen er U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, med 16 dommerhjemler[2] og tinghus på Constitution Avenue.[3] Ankesaker går til anneninstansdomstolen U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.

Distriktets United States attorney har både ordinære føderale oppgaver og ansvar for lokal rettshåndhevelse (i byretten Superior Court of the District of Columbia). Embetet er landets største, med mer enn 350 påtaleadvokater og 350 støttepersonell.[4]

Distriktets United States marshal har ansvar for sikkerheten i en rekke føderale domstoler i distriktet.[5]
