Denver på Commons

Denver er hovedstaden og den største byen i delstaten Colorado i USA. Den har 663 862 innbyggere (pr. 2014); med forsteder har Denver-Aurora området omtrent 2,83 millioner innbyggere. Denver ble grunnlagt i 1854 og oppkalt etter guvernøren i Kansas-territoriet, som het James W. Denver.

Denver ligger ved foten av fjellkjeden Rocky Mountains. 15. trinn på Colorados Kapitol ligger 1 609 m over havet, hvilket har gitt Denver navnet «Mile High City».

Siden Denver er den største byen med 600 km omkrets, er den et viktig transportsentrum. Den nye flyplassen som ble åpnet i 1995 var, målt i antall passasjerer, USAs 5. største og verdens 10. største i 2004 og verdens nest største etter areal.

Denver County

Denver er også et fylke, og det grenser mot Adams County i nordøst, Arapahoe County i øst og mot Jefferson County i vest. Det har et totalt areal på 401 km² hvorav 4 km² er vann. Fylket ble grunnlagt i 1902 av land som ble skilt ut fra Arapahoe County.

Severdigheter

Larimer Square er en trendy gate som har en rekke kaféer, restauranter samt forretninger downtown i Denver. Her får en inntrykk av såvel historien som det mer moderne Denver.

Marlowe's Restaurant er beliggende midt i sentrum.

Colorado History Museum gir en beskrivelse av historien til indianere, cowboys samt gullgravere fra Colorado.

Invesco Field er hjemmebanen til Denver Broncos. Her finnes dessuten Colorado Sports Hall of Fame museum.

Red Rocks Ampitheatre er et naturlig amfi med 9 000 seter. Der har det blitt arrangert konserter med grupper som The Beatles og U2.
