DS «Constitutionen»

Arendal havn midt på 1800-tallet med anløp av hjuldamperen «Constitutionen». Fra Norge fremstillet i Tegninger fra 1848.
Christopher Budde var offiser om bord på DS «Constitutionen» og førte skipet på hennes første seilas fra Kristiania til Kristiansand.[1]

DS «Constitutionen» var Norges første dampskip, og Postverket var landets første dampskipsrederi. DS «Constitutionen» ble kjøpt inn fra England i 1826 som postbåt først og fremst for å bedre postgangen, men hun tok også i alt 32 passasjerer og last. DS «Constitutionen» ble i 1827 satt i kystrute mellom Christiania (dagens Oslo) og Christiansand. I 1827 kjøpte Postverket enda et skip, DS «Prinds Carl». De to skipene korresponderte i Stavern. DS «Prinds Carl» gikk til København via Göteborg, og var dermed den første danskebåt med dampmaskin som gikk i fast rute.

Constitutionen ble hogd opp i 1871.

Annet

Da «Constitutionen» anløp Christiania 17. mai 1829, ble ankomsten opptakten til det såkalte «torgslaget», der blant andre Henrik Wergeland kjempet for å markere Norges grunnlovsdag.

Da koleraepidemien nådde Christiansand høsten 1853, hadde den første i byen som ble smittet og døde, arbeidet nettopp på «Constitutionen». Sunnhetskommisjonen i Christiansand ønsket innskrenket drift av skipet, som opplagt hadde brakt med seg smitten, men fikk ingen respons fra sentralt hold. Delvis var karantene som sykdomsforebyggende tiltak fremdeles omdiskutert; delvis var «Constitutionen» et nasjonalt symbol og landets stolthet.[2]

«Constitutionen» har også vært i bruk som sykehus. Etter bybrannen i Drammen i 1866, holdt byens sykehus en kort stund til i telt før pasientene fikk plass på dampskipet.[3]
