Dødsskvadron

Dødsskvadron er en betegnelse på en bevæpnet gruppe (eller «bande») som på eget eller andres initiativ og bestilling foretar forfølgelser og henrettelser uten forutgående rettergang. En dødsskvadron kan arbeide for en stats politiske og/eller militære makthavere for å kvitte seg med motstandere og rivaler som ikke kan bekjempes effektivt med legale midler. Dødsskvadronenes medlemmer rekrutteres særlig i militære eller paramilitære organisasjoner og politiorganisasjoner, men kan også hentes i kriminelle bander.

Utbredelse

Dødsskvadroner har særlig vært brukt av militærdiktaturer i Latin-Amerika i 1970-årene og 1980-årene. Omfattende eksempler fra Argentina og Chile har vært dratt inn i rettssaker mot en rekke generaler. Perus president fra 1990 til 2000, Alberto Fujimori, ble i april 2009 dømt for en rekke forbrytelser, herunder mord utført av dødsskvadroner i hans regjeringstid. I El Salvador ble mordet på erkebiskop Óscar Romero utført av en dødsskvadron på ordre av offiseren og høyrepolitikeren Roberto D'Aubuisson.
