Christchurch på Commons

Christchurch er en by på østkysten av Sørøya på New Zealand.

Byen har fått sitt navn fra kollegiet Christ Church ved University of Oxford i England. Maori-navnet for byen er Ōtautahi etter høvdingen Tautahi som styrte en landsby i området.

Geografi

Christchurch og omliggende områder sett fra verdensrommet.

Christchurch er den største byen og administrasjonssenter i regionen Canterbury. Den ligger i sørenden av Pegasus Bay, midt på østkysten av Sørøya. I sør ligger halvøya Banks Peninsula og i nord sletteområdet Canterbury Plains. Den offisielle «byen» avgrenses i øst av Stillehavet og våtmarksområdene til elvene Avon River og Heathcote River. I sør og sørøst er det de vulkanske åsene, Port Hills, som flankerer byen. Offisielt går bygrensen ved Waimakariri-elven i nord, men det urbane området strekker seg litt forbi denne.

De mange parkene og velholdte private hagene har gitt byen tilnavnet «The Garden City» eller «Hagebyen».

Mesteparten av byen er flat og kun få meter over havnivå.

Byens sentrum er katedralplassen Cathedral Square, som ligger foran den anglikanske katedralen Christ Church.

Jordskjelv

Den 4. september 2010 ble byen rammet av et stort jordskjelv på 7,1 momentmagnituder. Jordskjelvet rammet kl 4,35 om morgenen og forårsaket store skader. Episenteret var om lag 40 kilometer vest for sentrum, 10 kilometer sørøst for Darfield.

Et nytt jordskjelv med styrke 6,3 rammet området den 22. februar 2011 og etterlot seg store skader og mange omkomne.[1]

Terrorangrep

15. mars 2019 ble Christchurch rammet av terrorangrep.[2] I alt 50 mennesker døde og nesten like mange ble såret etter at den australske, 28 år gamle høyreekstremisten Brenton Tarrant bevæpnet ned skytevåpen angrep to moskeer i byen der folk hadde samlet seg til fredagsbønn.[3] Terroristen strømmet massakren direkte på sosiale medier og publiserte et politisk manifest i tilknytning til aksjonen. På samme måte som Anders Behring Breivik etter terroren i Norge 2011, har Tarrant og masseskytingen i Christchurch blitt et forbilde for rasistisk vold i høyreekstreme miljøer på Internett.[4]
