China Inland Mission

China Inland Missions hovedsete i London.

China Inland Mission var et protestantisk misjonsselskap grunnlagt av den engelske misjonær Hudson Taylor den 25. juni 1865 i Brighton i England. Han var tilbake på hjembesøk etter misjonsarbeid i traktatsbyen Ningbo i Zhejiang i Kina.

Den 26. mai 1866 seilte den første gruppe misjonærer med seilskipet «Lammermuir» til Kina. Reisen tok fire måneder. Indre deler av Kina var tilgjengelige for protestantisk misjon etter opiumskrigene og det var dette som China Inland Mission skulle spesialisere seg på.

CIM stilte ikke konfesjonelle krav; så lenge det dreide seg om anglikanske eller protestantiske misjonærkandidater, og ellers oppfylte noen minstekrav, kunne de være med. CIM var i lang tid det dominerende protestantiske misjonsselskap i Kina.

Under bokseropprøret i 1900 var utenlandske misjonærer et viktig angrepsmål. China Inland Mission tapte flere medlemmer enn noe annet enkeltstående misjonsselskap: 58 voksne og 21 barn ble drept. Men i 1901, da fremmedmaktene krevde kompensasjon fra den kinesiske regjering, nektet Hudson Taylor å motta noen pengeerstatning for tap av liv eller eiendom i den hensikt å vise kineserne et eksempel på Kristi ydmykhet.
