Branngrav

Branngrav er en relativt vanlig funnkategori i nordisk arkeologi. Den døde ble kremert enten i et bål som siden ble tildekket, eller så ble asken og restene av den døde plassert – med eller uten urne – i en grav. Gravgaver ble som regel brent med kroppen, men ble enkelte ganger lagt ned i graven etter kremeringen.[1]

Tradisjonelt har skikken med branngraver blitt regnet som kjennetegnet for overgangen mellom eldre og yngre bronsealder, det vil si omkring 1100 f.Kr. Nyere forskning viser imidlertid at man begynte å kremere de døde noe før dette. Noen av de eldste branngravene i Norge er fra de store gravfeltene i Østfold; Hunnfeltene i Fredrikstad og Opstadfeltet i Sarpsborg.[2]
