Boston på Commons

Boston er hovedstaden og den største byen i delstaten Massachusetts i USA. Boston er også den uoffisielle hovedstaden i regionen New England. Byen er en av de eldste og mest velstående i USA, med en økonomi basert på utdannelse, helsetjenester, finans og høyteknologi.

Byen ble grunnlagt 17. september 1630 og er oppkalt etter Boston i England. En rekke kjente universiteter, deriblant, Boston College, Boston University og Berklee College of Music holder til i byen.

Boston styres av en borgermester og et bystyre. Borgermesteren, som er den viktigste myndigheten, velges for en periode på fire år. Bystyret velges for en periode på to år.

Historie

Boston var en av de tretten originale statene i USA og ble først bosatt i 1630.[3] Boston er et sentralt sted i amerikansk histore. I eldre tider var Boston en av de første byene i USA til å gjøre motstand mot Storbritannia. I 1770 var det stor misnøye over alle skattene Storbritannia innførte og folk reagerte ved å gjøre narr av soldater, men britene viste ingen nåde da britiske soldater i Boston-massakren skjøt inn i en mengde med folk og drepte fem mennesker.[4] En mer kjent begivenhet var da amerikanske patrioter kledde seg ut som indianere, sekstende desember i 1773, og listet seg ombord i båter lastet med te fra det ostindiske kompani, og veltet flere hundre kasser med te ut i vannet, som en reaksjon etter at britene økte skatten på te i 1773.[5][6] Dette ble i seinere tid kalt for "The Boston Tea Party" .[7] Britene reagerte ved å blokkere havnen med kampskip og innførte streng militær ledelse i byen.[5] Dette var en av årsakene til den amerikanske revolusjonen.[8]

Blant de viktigste attraksjonene i Boston er blant andre Copley Square Mall, Newbury Street, Downtown Crossing, og Quincy Market for shopping; for sport er Boston Red Sox (baseball), Boston Bruins (ishockey), Boston Celtics (basketball), New England Patriots (amerikansk fotball), og New England Revolution (fotball); for kultur er Museum of Fine Arts, Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO), Boston Ballet, Huntington Theater, Museum of Science, Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA), og New England Aquarium; og for historie finnes The Freedom Trail, JFK Memorial Museum & Library, Faneuil Hall & Quincy Market og Boston Tea Party Museum.
