Boeing 747-8 er den nyeste versjonen av Boeing 747 jumbojet. Modellen ble presentert 14. november 2005 som en konkurrent til Airbus A380. Før den offisielle presentasjonen i 2005 var dette flyet kjent som Boeing 747 Advanced.

Bakgrunn

747-8 vil gjøre bruk av samme motorer og cockpittype som 787. Boeing ga flyet navnet 747-8 på grunn av bruken av samme teknologi som 787. Før 747-8 ble offisielt lansert hadde Boeing planer om å utvikle andre varianter av eksisterende 747-typer. Disse var planlagt navngitt 747X (Experimental) og 747-XQLR (Experimental Quiet Long Range). Disse navnene ble til slutt erstattet av "747 Advanced" programmet, som utviklet seg til det nåværende 747-8.

Boeing hevder at den nye 747-8 vil ha et lavere støynivå, være mer økonomisk og mer miljøvennlig enn tidligere varianter av Boeing 747. Siden det er en videreutvikling av den eksisterende 747-400 drar også flyet fordel av økonomiske fortrinn som følge av liknende utdanning og bruk av felles deler mellom de to variantene. I motsetning til hovedkonkurrenten Airbus-380 som trenger et modifisert gangbro-opplegg og større parkeringsplass ved flyplassene, vil 747-8 kunne bruke allerede eksisterende infrastruktur. 747-8 vil også kunne trafikkere mindre flyplasser enn Airbus A-380 kan.

Passasjervarianten (747-8 Intercontinental) vil ha kapasitet til å ta 450 passasjerer fordelt over 3 klasser i overkant av 8 000 nautiske mil (14 816 km) med en hastighet på Mach 0,86. Air China, Korean Airlines og Lufthansa er kommersielle kjøpere av denne versjonen. USAs myndigheter har også bestilt to eksemplarer, for bruk som presidentfly. .

Konstruksjonsendringer

Passasjervarianten vil bli 74,3 m lang (3,6 m lenger enn 747-400), noe som gir plass til 34 flere passasjerer og 2 ekstra fraktpaller. Ny motorteknologi og bedre aerodynamikk vil også forlenge rekkevidden til 8 000 nautiske mil (14 816 km), noe som gir flyet mulighet til non-stop flyruter på strekninger som Hongkong–New York eller Sydney–Dallas.
