Augustin Fresnel på Commons

Augustin-Jean Fresnel (1788–1827) var en fransk fysiker som bidro betydelig innen optikk. Fresnel studerte lysets oppførsel, både teoretisk og eksperimentelt.

Hans oppdagelser og matematiske deduksjoner, basert på arbeidene til Thomas Young, utvidet hans bølgeteori om lys med mange flere optiske fenomener.

Sammen med François Arago studerte Fresnel lovene om interferens av polariserte stråler. Dette resulterte i «Fresnels rombe». Fresnel er sannsynligvis mest kjent for oppfinnelsen av Fresnel-linse, som ble tatt i bruk i fyr, og fremdeles er i bruk.
