Aruba på Commons

Aruba er en selvstyrende øystat i Karibia og utgjør sammen med Nederland, Curaçao og Sint Maarten Kongeriket Nederlandene. Aruba ligger like utenfor kysten av Venezuela, og ble kolonisert av nederlenderne i 1636. Fram til 1986 var øya en del av De nederlandske Antiller. Større deler av Arubas økonomi baserer seg på turisme, særlig turister fra USA. I tillegg er oljeraffinerier viktige for landets økonomi. Ved siden av nederlandsk er papiamento landets offisielle språk, som snakkes av store deler av befolkningen. Papiamento er et kreolspråk, basert på spansk, portugisisk, nederlandsk, engelsk, fransk og flere afrikanske språk. De fleste innbyggerne er katolikker.

Øyas hovedstad er Oranjestad, med 28 000 innbyggere.

Øya har vært under nederlandsk styre siden 1636. Den var en del av De nederlandske Antiller fra 1954 og har siden 1986 hatt autonomi.[3]

Ved folketellingen i 2010 hadde landet en befolkning på 101 484.[4]

Språk

Ved folketellingen i 2010 talte 68,3 % av innbyggerne vanligvis papiamento. 13,5 snakket spansk, 7 % engelsk, 6 % nederlandsk og 1,4 % kinesisk.[5]

Befolkningen tilhører for det meste kristendommen. I folketellingen i 2010 oppga 75,3 % av befolkningen at de var katolikker. 2,7 % var protestanter og 1,7 % Jehovas vitner. 11,7 % oppga å tilhøre andre trossamfunn, mens 5,5 % ikke tilhørte noen religion.[6]
