Żagań (tsjekkisk Záhaň, tysk Sagan, latin Saganum) er en by i vestlige del av Polen. Den ligger i Lubusz voivodskap ved elven Bóbr. Byen er blant annet kjent for det barokke Żagań-slottet fra 1670.

Historie

Żagań-slottet

En legende sier at byen ble grunnlagt av Żaganna, barnebarnet til den mytiske herskeren Krak, som ifølge en annen legende hadde grunnlagt Kraków. Ifølge historikere ble Żagań grunnlagt av Bolesław IV av Polen i midten av det 12. århundre. I historiske kilder er Żagań nevnt for første gang i 1202. I 1285 fikk Żagań bystatus, og tilhørte fra 1252 hertugdømmet Głogów. Byen var fra 1413 til 1472 sete for et selvstendig fyrstedømme.

I 1472 ble fyrstedømmet og byen solgt til Wettinslekten. Under hertug Henrik den fromme (1539–41) utbredte reformasjonen seg. Kurfyrst Moritz av Sachsen overlot Sagan i 1549 til den bøhmiske kongen Ferdinand I. I 1627 kom den legendariske Albrecht von Wallenstein i besittelse av byen. På invitasjon fra Wallenstein virket den berømte astronomen og matematikeren Johannes Kepler i byen mellom 1627 og 1630, og monterte den aller første lynavlederstangen i Europa. Byens viktigste kultur- og vitenskapssentrum var klosteret til Augustinerordenen.

Under den første schlesiske krig kom byen under Preussen, og ble gitt som len av kronen til forskjellige familier. På slutten av det 18. århundre ble byen styrt av familiene Biron og Talleyrand, og perioden var byens gullepoke når den ble besøkt av blant annet Franz Liszt. Byen ble gitt som len så sent som i 1844, som siste prøyssiske kronlen, og lensavhengigheten utløp først i 1935. Under annen verdenskrig ble krigsfangeleiren Stalag Luft III etablert i nærheten av Żagań. Denne leiren er kjent fra filmen Den store flukten (the Great Escape). På slutten av krigen ble byen erobret av Den røde armé. Som følge av Potsdamkonferansen ble byen gitt til Polen og den tysktalende befolkningen fordrevet.
