Pergament

Pergamentmakar. Tysk tresnitt frå 1568.

Pergament er eit materiale som vart brukt til bøker og diplom. Det vart laga av fint kalve-, geite- eller saueskinn. Vellum refererer spesifikt til kalveskinnspergament, som er den beste typen. Materialet vart ifølgje Plinius den eldre fyrst brukt i Pergamon under Eumenes I (263–241 f.Kr.) eller Eumenes II (197–160 f.Kr.), og har namnet sitt derifrå.

Skinnet vart skrapa slik at det vart tynt nok til å kunne bindast inn i ei bok. Pergament er eit haldbart materiale, men er sårbart for mygl, bakteriar og skadedyr. Rett oppbevaring er difor viktig. Mange gamle bøker er vortne øydelagde i bibliotek som har hatt fuktig luft eller ikkje god nok kontroll med gnagarar.

Sjølv om pergament vart teke i bruk i antikken var det i mellomalderen materialet hadde gullalderen sin. Det vart etterkvart erstatta av papir, som vart produsert i Europa frå 1000-talet, etter at maurarane hadde introdusert det i Andalusia. Det skulle gå endå ei tid før pergamentet gjekk or bruk, særleg til produksjon av praktverk. Med boktrykkarkunsten forsvann pergament nesten heilt. Frå sist på 1900-talet har materialet vorte teke i bruk att av ein del kunstnarar.

Ein særskild type pergament er palimpsest. Det er brukt pergament der skrifta er skrapa bort slik at det kan brukast omatt. Ved hjelp av moderne hjelpemiddel som røntgen og infraraudt ljos har ein kunna lese den opphavlege skrifta, noko som har ført til at verk ein trudde var tapte er vorten attfunne.
