Het seizoen 2002/2003 van FC Groningen was het 32ste jaar in het Nederlandse betaald voetbal voor de club uit Groningen. De club kwam voor de 21ste keer uit in de Eredivisie, nadat FC Groningen in het vorige seizoen op de vijftiende plaats was geëindigd in de eindrangschikking.

De club stond onder leiding van Dwight Lodeweges. Die nam op 21 oktober ontslag, daags na de thuisnederlaag (2-3) tegen RKC Waalwijk. Enkele honderden Groningen-supporters blokkeerden na afloop van de wedstrijd de hoofdpoort van het Oosterparkstadion en eisten het onmiddellijke vertrek van Lodeweges. "Mijn vertrek is het beste voor de club. Het krediet dat ik had bij de supporters is volledig op. De druk op mij was de laatste tijd onmenselijk", liet Lodeweges het bestuur weten.[1]

Lodeweges werd opgevolgd door Ron Jans. De assistent-trainer van FC Emmen en de eredivisieclub werden het eens over een contract. Jans kwam in beeld nadat oud-FC Utrecht-trainer Frans Adelaar had bedankt voor de eer. Jans speelde in de jaren tachtig twee seizoenen voor FC Groningen. Bij Emmen was hij assistent van Hennie Spijkerman. Onder Jans' hoede eindigde FC Groningen opnieuw de vijftiende plaats in de eindrangschikking. In het bekertoernooi strandde de club in de kwartfinale, waarin AFC Ajax te sterk was.
