Lilin (bahan)

Lilin (Jawi: ‏ليلين‎‎, bahasa Inggeris: wax) merupakan bahan yang terhasil secara semulajadi hasil rembesan tumbuh-tumbuhan (berupa damar atau resin) ataupun haiwan (seperti pada sarang tebuan dan lebah).

Sifat kimia

Lilin merupakan sebatian organik terdiri daripada rantaian alkil panjang. Lilin semulajadi lazim mempunyai seberapa kelompok berfungsi termasuk asid lemak, alkohol jenis primer dan sekunder, keton, aldehid ataupun ester, lilin sintetik pula merantai hidrokarbon alipatik seperti alkana yang tiada kelompok sampingan sedemikian.[1]

Penggunaan

Lilin cair dincatingkan semasa menghasilkan corak batik.

Secara umumnya, lilin lazim digulungkan bersama sumbu untuk tujuan pencahayaan atau perhiasan.digunakan secara luas dalam industri.

Dalam pembuatan batik, lilin dicanting mengikut pelbagai corak diingini pada kain agar warna asal kain yang tercanting tidak terjejas apabila kain dicelupkan bersama pewarna lalu menonjolkan corak dihasilkan.

Lilin yang ditambahkan bahan pewarna boleh dijadikan bahan mencoret untuk tujuan seni (misalnya krayon) ataupun tatarias diri (seperti gincu dan maskara). Bahan ini juga boleh disadurkan pada kertas untuk fungsi tertentu (seperti kertas lilin atau kertas karbon).
