Epiglotis

Epiglotis ialah sejenis lipatan rawan elastikyang ditutup dengan membran bermukus yang melekat kepada rongga masuk larinks. Ia menghala secara tidak langsung di belakang lidah dan tulang hioid, menunjuk ke belakang. Ia kekal terbuka semasa bernafas membolehkan udara masuk ke dalam larinks. Semasa menelan, ia menutup untuk mencegah aspirasi, memaksa cecair atau makanan ditelan untuk pergi sebaliknya ke arah esofagus. Oleh itu, epiglotis ini berfungsi sebagai suatu injap itu mengalihkan laluan tekak sama ada ke dalam trakea mahupun esofagus.

Struktur

Epiglotis adalah salah satu dari sembilan struktur rawan yang membentuk larinks (kotak suara). Semasa pernafasan, ia terletak di dalam larinks manakala semasa menelan pula ia berfungsi sebagai sebahagian daripada anterior farinks.[perlu rujukan]

Fungsi

Epiglotis biasanya menunjuk ke atas sewaktu pernafasan dengan bahagian bawahnya berfungsi sebagai sebahagian daripada farinks. Semasa menelan, ketinggian tulang hioid menarik larinks ke atas; hasilnya, epiglotis melipat kepada kedudukan yang lebih mendatar, dengan sisi superiornya berfungsi sebagai sebahagian daripada farinks. Dengan cara ini, ia menghalang makanan daripada pergi ke trakea (tenggorok) dan sebaliknya kepada esofagus yang terletak di belakang trakea. Seandainya makanan atau minuman termasuk ke dalam salur udara kerana epiglotis tidak menutup dengan betul, refleks gag akan dicetuskan bagi melindungi sistem pernafasan.
