Enamel gigi

Enamel gigi adalah lapisan luar gigi yang boleh dilihat dari permukaan.[1] Lapisan ini mengandungi 5% air dan 95% zat bukan organik hidroksil apalit (sebatian/senyawa kalsium fosfat) dan zat organik (protein dan mukopolisakarida). Enamel bahan semulajadi terkuat dalam tubuh manusia di tangga ke-5 skala Mohs antara keras besi dan titanium serta daya kaku sebanyak 83 GPa[1][2] lebih kuat daripada tulang. Akan tetapi, enamel mudah terdedah kepada asid rembesan bakteria dalam mulut mencerna sisa gula makanan yang melarutkan enamel hingga rosak.[3]
