Tonas

Tonas – geologinis neoproterozojaus eros periodas, prasidėjęs prieš 1 mlrd. metų ir pasibaigęs prieš 850 mln. m. Šio laikotarpio ribos nustatytos Tarptautinės stratigrafijos komisijos, remiantis radiometriniu datavimu, o ne pagal uolienų sluoksnius, kaip daugelio kitų periodų.[1]

Tono periodu egzistavo Rodinijos superkontinentas, kurį supo Mirovijos vandenynas. Prasidėjo procesai, dėl kurių šis kontinentas vėliau suskilo (riftų formavimasis bei plokščių skėtimasis). Dėl plokščių skėtimosi formavosi vidinės jūros. Ten, kur kadaise būta vidinių jūrų ar vandenyno pakrančių, rasta stromatolitų.[2]

Šiuo laikotarpiu vyravo gana žemos temperatūros. Kaip spėjama, vidutinė temperatūra galėjo būti 10 °C žemesnė nei dabar, ypač centrinėse žemyno srityse.[1]

Buvo aptikta tono periodu datuojamų daugialąsčių dumblių fosilijų. Jokių gyvūnų fosilijų (atspaudų), priskirtinų šiam geologiniam periodui, rasta nebuvo. Visgi, tai nebūtinai reiškia, kad tuo metu gyvūnai dar neegzistavo, nes fosilijų galėjo neišlikti dėl to, kad tuometiniai gyvūnai buvo maži ir sudaryti iš minkštųjų audinių. Aptikti galimi smulkių gyvūnų veiklos pėdsakai, kurie galėjo būti palikti į kirmėles panašių gyvūnų, savo dydžiu (apie 5 mm pločio) ir sudėtingumu prilygstančių sliekams.[3][1]

Tono periodu deguonies lygis atmosferoje buvo žemesnis nei vėlesniais kriogenio bei ediakario periodais[4], todėl sąlygos sudėtingesnių gyvybės formų evoliucijai nebuvo palankios. Organizmų įvairovė apsiribojo vienaląsčiais grybais, bakterijomis, archėjomis, kai kuriais daugialąsčiais dumbliais ir galbūt primityviais gyvūnais. Tikėtina, jog šios gyvybės formos gyveno tik tose sausumos vietose, kurios buvo prie pat vandens šaltinių. Kadangi dar neegzistavo ozono sluoksnis, iš esmės sausuma nebuvo tinkama gyvybei dėl jai pražūtingų ultravioletinių spindulių. Mikroorganizmai telkėsi į stambias, didelio tankio kolonijas („mikrobų kilimėlius“).[1]

Dažniausios šiam periodui priskiriamos fosilijos – akritarchai. Tai daugiausia įvairių nežinomų organizmų bei planktoninių dumblių liekanos.[1] Tono periodu akritarchų įvairovė pirmą kartą gerokai išaugo. Išskyrus nedidelį sumažėjimą per kriogenio apledėjimus, ji išliko panaši visą neoproterozojaus erą.[2]
