Ignotas Žagelis (1826 m. vasario 14 d. Pavirinčiuose, Rusijos imperija – 1891 m. birželio 21 d. Varšuvoje, Lenkijos Kongreso karalystė) – gydytojas, istorikas, archeologas, vienas žymiausių XIX a. lietuvių keliautojų.

Biografija

Gimė 1826 m. vasario 14 d. Pavirinčiuose. Tėvas buvo dvarininkas kunigaikštis, teisėjas. Brolis Adomas Eduardas Maksimilijonas Žagelis buvo teisininkas, kraštotyrininkas. Iki 1843 m. mokėsi Ukmergėje. 1845–1850 m. studijavo Kijevo universiteto Medicinos fakultete, įgijo gydytojo išsilavinimą. 1850–1852 m. I. Žagelis dirbo gydytoju Odesoje. 1852–1856 m. jis išvyko į mokslinę kelionę po Europą, tobulinosi Berlyne, Drezdene, Prahoje ir Vienoje. Nuo 1856 m. jis studijavo Paryžiaus universitete, paskui tęsė ir baigė studijas Londone, kur 1859 m. gavo medicinos daktaro mokslinį laipsnį.

1859 m. I. Žagelis dirbo gydytoju Londone, paskui tobulinosi Sorbonoje ir Oksforde, išgarsėjo kaip okulistas. Gyvendamas didmiesčiuose, jis lankė muziejus, mokslo centrus, bendravo su mokslininkais, buvo išrinktas Oksfordo universiteto garbės nariu. 1859–1863 m. jis buvo Jungtinės Karalystės kariuomenės gydytojas Madrase (Indija). 1863–1870 m. I. Žagelis gyveno Egipte, kur buvo vicekaraliaus rūmų okulistas, 1870–1876 m. tarnavo pas Maroko sultoną Abdul Azizą.

1860–1861 m. jis dalyvavo archeologiniuose tyrinėjimuose Karnako šventyklos ir Tėbų griuvėsiuose. 1863–1876 m. keliavo po Šiaurės Afriką ir Sacharą, Abisiniją, Turkiją, lankėsi Ceilone, Javoje, Sumatroje, Madagaskare. Kartu su M. Tiškevičiumi jis tyrinėjo Arabijos regioną ir Egiptą. Jis laikomas pirmuoju europiečiu, atradusiu Nilo ištakas. I. Žagelis keliavo Nilu nuo pat jo ištakų iki žiočių, surinko daug eksponatų, kuriuos pasiuntė Europos muziejams.

Nuo 1871 m. jis buvo Imperatoriškosios Vilniaus medicinos draugijos narys. 1876 m. sugrįžęs į Lietuvą ir apsigyvenęs Vilniuje, I. Žagelis 1876–1881 m. dirbo Vilniaus miesto tarybos sanitarinės komisijos pirmininku. Gyvendamas Vilniuje parašė apie 20 knygų ir straipsnių medicinos, istorijos, geografijos, geologijos, klimatologijos ir kitais klausimais lenkų, prancūzų ir anglų kalbomis.[1]
