Ipomoea batatas (binomen ab Ioanne Baptista Lamarckio anno 1793 statutum), Latinitate communi batatas ,[ 1] est species quae ad familiam Convolvulacearum pertinet. Eius origo est America Meridionalis , sed nunc in omnibus regionibus tropicalibus colitur, quia radix sua editur.
Tuberibus facultas aphrodisiaca olim attribuebatur: unde Ioannes Falstaff persona Shakesperiana in The Merry Wives of Windsor (act. 5 sc. 5) pluvium e caelo batatarum requisivisse fingitur (Let the skie raine potatoes ).
