Iacobus Murray, filius vestiarii Thomassi Murray, natus est apud Denholm iuxta HawickScotiae, in quo urbe magister in Hawick Grammar School meruit; mox Londinii degens apud Mill Hill School docuit; eodem tempore, socius Societatis Philologicae, investigationes linguarum, et praecipue dialectorum Anglicarum, persecutus est. Anno 1878 igitur, suadente praecipue Frederico Furnivall, a delegatis preli universitarii Oxoniensis receptus est ad munus editoriale lexici novi; in quo opere, materie a Societate Philologica collecta utens moxque Oxoniam habitans, Murray vitam omnem transegit.
