시트웨(버마어: စစ်တွေ 싯뛔) 또는 아잡(버마어: အာကျပ် 아짭, 영어: Akyap 아걉[*])은 미얀마의 여카잉주의 주도이다. 컬라단강, 머유강, 레묘강이 합류해 벵골만으로 흘러드면서 형성된 강어귀의 섬에 위치한다. 인구는 2006년 기준으로 181,000명이다.

어원

시트웨의 원래 이름은 'Saite-Twêy'로 전쟁이 일어난 곳이라는 의미이다. 1784년에 버마국왕 보더브야가 마라욱 왕국을 침공했을 때 이곳에서 전투가 벌어진 데에서 유래한다. 이후 버마족에 의해 'Sittwe'로 불리게 되었다.

제1차 영국-미얀마 전쟁 중인 1826년 초에 영국군이 싯뒈에 상륙하였고 고대의 불탑인 아짭(버마어: အာကျိတ်, 아찟)에 주둔하였고 영국인들은 아키아브(영어: Akyab 아걉[*])라는 이름을 쓰게 되었다.

역사

원래 작은 어촌이었던 시트웨는 영국이 여카잉을 점령한 후에 쌀의 수출하는 항구로서 해상 무역의 중요한 장소가 되었다.

시트웨는 버마국왕 보더브야가 여카잉을 정복할 때 전투가 벌어진 장소이다. 1784년에 약 3만 명의 버마의 원정군과 3천 명의 여카잉군이 맞붙었다. 숫적으로 크게 열세인 여카잉인들은 수륙 양면으로 버마군과 싸웠으나 궤멸당했다. 이 패배로 여카잉의 수도인 내륙 도시 마락우로 가는 길이 열리게 되었고, 곧 정복되어 여카잉의 독립은 끝나게 되었다.

1826년의 제1차 영국-미얀마 전쟁 후에 영국은 정부의 소재지를 해안의 시뛔로 옮겼다. 영국의 지배 첫 40년 동안 마을의 인구는 15,536명으로 늘어났다. 1901년까지 31,687명의 인구를 가진 미얀마의 제3의 항구가 되었다.

시트웨는 미얀마의 정치적인 승려의 출생지이다. 식민지 영국에 최초로 저항한 우 오타마가 이곳에서 태어났다. 또한 최근의 2007년의 시위 때도 시트웨의 승려들은 가장 먼저 저항을 시작했다.

인구

도시는 불교도가 다수를 점하고 있지만 로힝야족과 같은 무슬림 사회도 크게 형성되어 있다. 전체 인구의 40% 이상이 무슬림이다.
