시러큐스(Syracuse, IPA: [ˈsɛrəkjuːs])는 미국 동북부 뉴욕주에 있는 도시이다. 인구147,306(2000). 뉴욕주 중부, 온타리오호의 남쪽에 있는 오넌다가 호 연안에 위치하며, 오넌다가 군의 군청소재지이다. 온타리오 호 남쪽에 위치하는 지형적 조건으로 인하여 이 도시는 눈이 많이 오는 것으로 유명한데, 연평균 강설량이 약 116인치(약 293 센티미터)에 달하여[1], 미국의 인구 10만 이상 도시 중에서는 강설량이 가장 많아 종종 폭설로 인한 피해를 입기도 한다. 과거 오넌다가 인디언 부족의 중심지였으나, 18세기 이후 백인이 정착하였다. 지명은 이탈리아 시칠리아의 유서깊은 도시 시라쿠사에서 유래한다. 올버니와 버펄로의 중간 지점에 있고, 이리 운하가 연결되면서 수운교통의 요지로 발전하였다. 철도가 개통된 후 교통의 중심지로서 더욱 중요해졌다. 오넌다가 호와 부근의 호수에서 소금을 채취할 수 있어서 초기에는 제염업이 성하여 19세기에는 미국 소금 수요의 대부분이 이 도시에서 만들어진 소금으로 충당되었다. 후에 소금산업은 쇠퇴하였으나 편리한 교통을 바탕으로 각종 공업이 발달하여 뉴욕 주의 주요 공업도시가 되었다. 뉴욕주 중앙부의 중심지로, 뉴욕 주에서 다섯 번째로 인구가 많은 도시이다. 그러나 최근에는 인구가 감소 추세에 있다. 고등교육기관으로는 사립 시러큐스 대학교가 유명한데, 이 대학의 행정학, 신문방송학과는 미국 최고 수준이다. 그 외에도 몇몇 대학과 박물관이 있는 문화중심지이다.
