사우스벤드

사우스벤드(South Bend)는 미국 중서부 인디애나주에 있는 도시이다. 미국 2010년도 인구통계(census)에 따르면 사우스벤드시의 인구는 101,168명, 주변 도시를 포함한 미시애나(Michiana; South Bend-Mishawaka Metropolitan Statistical Area의 애칭)의 인구는 318,586명이다. 인디애나주 중북부, 세인트조지프군의 군청 소재지이다. 일리노이주 시카고 동쪽 130km 지점에 있으며, 미시간호가 서북쪽에 있다. 미시간 호의 동남쪽에 위치해 있기 때문에 호수효과(lake effect)로 인해 이 도시에는 시카고나 인디애나주 다른 지역보다 눈이 자주 내리고 강설량이 많다.[1]

인디애나주 북부와 미시간주 서남부의 중심지이며, 미국의 대표적인 가톨릭 계통 최상위권 명문 대학이자 미식축구로 유명한 노터데임 대학교(University of Notre Dame du Lac)가 있어 교육과 문화, 그리고 미식축구의 도시로 알려져 있다. 또한, 같은 카톨릭 계열의 세인트 메리 대학교(Saint Mary's College)와 홀리 크로스 대학교(Holy Cross College)도 위치해 있으며, 인디애나 대학교의 사우스벤드 캠퍼스도 위치해 있다.
