배서스트섬(Bathurst Island)은 오스트레일리아 북부 노던 준주의 섬이다. 멜빌섬과 함께 티위 제도를 이룬다.

개요

배서스트의 원주민들

배서스트에서 가장 대규모 취락지는 2010년까지 누이우로 알려졌던 남동쪽의 인구 1,450명을 가진 우루미야너이다.[1] 배서스트섬의 남동쪽에 자리를 잡은 우루미야너는 다윈 북쪽 약 70 km 떨어진 곳에 위치하고 있다. 두 번째로 큰 취락지는 우라쿠우로 인구는 50명이며, 우루미야너의 북서쪽 60 km 떨어진 곳에 위치한다. 세 번째 규모의 취락지는 ‘포 마일 캠프’(4 Mile Camp)라 불리는 소규모 가족 거주지로 우루미야너 서쪽 6 km 떨어진 곳에 자리를 잡고 있다.

역사

이 섬은 헨리 배더스트, 제 3대 배서스트 백작의 이름의 따서 지었다. 그는 멜빌 자작처럼 또한 캐나다섬, 배서스트섬에 그의 이름이 기억되고 있다. 1910년에서 1938년까지 그 섬은 ‘150명의 아내를 가진 주교’로 알려진 로마 가톨릭교회 프란시스 사비에르 그젤의 포교 지점으로 사용되었다. 그는 늙은이와 결혼하게 되어 있는 소녀들을 사서, 또래의 젊은이들과 결혼을 시킨 인물이었다.

188대의 일본 공군기를 동우원한 다윈 공습 동안에, 최초의 여파가 이 섬에 포교 활동을 하고 있던 가톨릭 사제인 존 맥그래스를 덮쳤다.
