ბიოგრაფია

მერი-დელ ჩილტონმა 1967 წელს დაამთავრა ილინოისის უნივერსიტეტის ქიმიის ფაკულტეტი. 1977 წელს მუშაობდა სიეტლში ვაშინგტონის უნივერსიტეტის მეცნიერ-თანამშრომლად. ამ დროს ჩაერთო კვლევაში, რომელმაც აჩვენა, რომ მცენარეების გვირგვინზე წარმომქმნელ აერობულ ბაქტერიებს (Rhizobium radiobacter), შეუძლიათ მცენარეთა უჯრედების ტრანსფორმირება და მათი გენეტიკური მასალის შემოტანა, რაც იწვევს მცენარეზე პათოლოგიური ორგანიზმების ზრდას. კერძოდ, Ti-პლაზიდების გენომის მხოლოდ გარკვეული ფრაგმენტი ინტეგრირებულია მცენარეთა ქრომოსომების გენომში. ამ ფრაგმენტს ეწოდა T-DNA .
