პლეისტოცენი (სიმბოლო PS[2]; ძვ. ბერძნ. πλεῖστος – მრავალრიცხოვანი და καινός – ახალი) — დედამიწის ისტორიის მეოთხეული პერიოდის შუა ეპოქა, რომელიც დაიწყო 2,588 მლნ. წლის წინათ და დამთავრდა 11,7 ათ. წლის წინ. მოსდევს ჰოლოცენს და წინ უსწრებს პლიოცენს. 1839 წელს ტერმინი „პლეისტოცენი“ მეცნიერებაში დაამკვიდრა ინგლისელმა გეოლოგმა ჩარლზ ლაიელმა, რომელმაც კუნძულ სიცილიაზე კვლევების შედეგად გამოავლინა ფენა, სადაც ინახებოდა მოლუსკების ფაუნის დაახლოებით 70%. ამან განასხვავა აღნიშნული ფენები პლიოცენური ეპოქისაგან, რომელსაც ლაიელი მანამდე მიაკუთვნებდა ყველაზე ახალგაზრდა ნამარხ ფენებს. მოგვიანებით ლაიელმა პლეისტოცენი გამოყო დამოუკიდებელ ეპოქად, რომელსაც პოსტპლიოცენური უწოდა. ჯერ კიდევ XX საუკუნეში ტერმინი პლეისტოცენი ხშირ შემთხვევაში წარმოადგენდა მეოთხეული პერიოდის ან ანთროპოგენის სინონიმს. პლეისტოცენი არის მეოთხეული პერიოდის პირველი ეპოქა ან კაინოზოური ჯგუფის მე-6 ეპოქა. პლეისტოცენი არსებითად ყინულოვანი ეპოქაა. არქეოლოგიური თვალსაზრისით, დაახლოებით ემთხვევა ძველი ქვის ხანას, ეგრეთ წოდებულ პალეოლითს.

საქართველოში კორელაციის სქემა იყოფა სამ სტადიად: ზედა პლეისტოცენი, შუა პლეისტოცენი, ქვედა პლეისტოცენი. საერთაშორისო სტანდარტული კლასიფიკაციის თანახმად პლეისტოცენი იყოდა ოთხ სტადიად: ზედა პლეისტოცენი, შუა პლეისტოცენი, ქვედა პლეისტოცენი, ჯელასიანი, რომლებიც გამოვლინდა სამხრეთ ევროპაში. გარდა ამისა, საერთაშორისო კლასიფიკაციას ხშირ შემთხვევაში გააჩნია სხვა რეგიონული ქვედანაყოფები.

პლეისტოცენში დედამიწა გამყინვარების ფაზაში უკვე შესული იყო. დამახასიათებელია მყინვარული პერიოდის თანმიმდევრულად შედარებით თბილ გამყინვარებათშორისით შეცვლა. პლეისტოცენი შედგება გამყინვარების ოთხი პერიოდისაგან, რომელთაგან პირველი და კლასიკურია გიუნცური გამყინვარება (1,2-1,0 მლნ. წლის წინ). გიუნცური აცივება დასრულდა გიუნც-მინდელური დათბობით (1,0-0,76 მლნ. წლის წინ), რომლის დროსაც ხმელთაშუა, შავ და ბერინგის ზღვებზე აღინიშნებოდა ტრანსგრესიები.

შემდეგ დადგა მინდელური გამყინვარება (დაახლ. 790-580 მლნ. წლის წინ), რომელსაც გამყინვარების გაცილებით რთული ხასიათი ჰქონდა. მას მოჰყვა რისული გამყინვარება, რომელიც ვიურმული გამყინვარებით დაგვირგვინდა.

თანამედროვე გეოლოგიისა და პალეოგეგრაფიის ამოცანაა უნიფიცირებული ქრონოსტრატიგრაფიული სკალების დასრულება და პლეისტოცენური ნალექების გლობალური კორელაცია; აგრეთვე პალეოგეოგრაფიული რეკონსტრუქციების შექმნა.
