レオ・ブルース

レオ・ブルース（Leo Bruce, 1903年6月20日 - 1979年6月10日）は、イギリスの著述家・推理作家である。本名はルーパート・クロフト＝クック（Rupert Croft-Cooke）。

推理小説のパロディ作品の一つ『三人の名探偵のための事件』などで知られる。本名でも犯罪小説や多数の自伝を執筆した。

経歴

1903年イギリスのケント州に生まれる。多くの学校を渡り歩いた後、アルゼンチンのブエノスアイレス大学に入学した。卒業後はまずは教師として働き、その後も転々と職をかえていく。著述家として活動を始めたのもこのころである。

第二次世界大戦中はイギリス軍に入隊し、植民地に派遣された。戦後は専業の作家として活動した。1953年には同性愛の嫌疑で投獄され、釈放後は10年以上もの間、タンジールに移住していた。

作風

著述家として生涯に100冊あまりの本を執筆した。その内容は多岐にわたる。うち現在まで知られているのは32冊あるブルース名義の推理小説である。

作中に登場する探偵役は最初の8長編がウィリアム・ビーフ巡査部長（Sergeant William Beef）、『死の扉』以降の23長編はパブリック・スクールの歴史教師キャロラス・ディーン（Carolus Deene）である。他に掌編のみ登場する閃き型の刑事・グリーブ巡査部長（Sergeant Grebe）ものが11編ある。
