Ruolo

Second Lady è un appellativo dato alle mogli dei Vicepresidenti degli Stati Uniti, sulla falsariga della First Lady degli Stati Uniti d'America, che è invece la moglie del Presidente degli Stati Uniti. La visibilità pubblica della Second Lady degli Stati Uniti è un fenomeno relativamente recente. Se il ruolo della First Lady come padrona della Casa Bianca risale alle origini della Repubblica (e viene in genere ricoperto da un'altra donna facente parte della famiglia del presidente in caso in cui egli sia vedovo, celibe o divorziato), è stato solo tra la fine del XX e l'inizio del XXI secolo che le mogli dei Vicepresidenti hanno cominciato ad assumere un certo ruolo pubblico, attirando così l'attenzione dei media.

Tipper Gore, moglie di Al Gore, è stata coinvolta in diverse campagne per liberalizzare l'intrattenimento popolare americano come il cinema, la televisione e la musica, campo in cui era stata attivista già al tempo in cui il marito era ancora senatore. Ha criticato alcuni artisti per il loro uso del turpiloquio ed ha spesso discusso con toni critici con personaggi come Jello Biafra, cantante dei Dead Kennedys.

Lynne Cheney, moglie del vicepresidente Dick Cheney, è stata promotrice di una riforma dell'istruzione, evidenziando falle specifiche del sistema educativo americano. Fu particolarmente impegnata per l'insegnamento della storia americana ed ha scritto, sul tema, cinque pubblicazioni di successo rivolte a bambini e famiglie. Jill Biden, moglie di Joe Biden, invece, ha lavoratо come insegnante di inglese al Northern Virginia Community College ed è stata la prima moglie di un Vicepresidente a continuare a svolgere regolarmente il proprio lavoro durante il periodo del mandato del marito. Nel 2021, con la nomina a vicepresidente di Kamala Harris, prima donna di sempre a ricoprire tale ruolo, Douglas Emhoff, marito della Harris, diventa il primo Second Gentleman della storia.
