NGC 3331 è una galassia a spirale barrata situata nella costellazione dell'Idra, a una distanza di circa 192 milioni di anni luce dalla nostra Via Lattea.[1]

Scoperta

La galassia è stata scoperta nel 1886 dall'astronomo statunitense Frank Muller.[1]

Descrizione

NGC 3331 ha una classe di luminosità I e presenta una larga riga a 21 cm dell'idrogeno neutro.[2] Nella galassia sono presenti anche regioni di idrogeno ionizzato.[2]

Gruppo di NGC 3313

NGC 3331 fa parte del Gruppo di NGC 3313 che comprende almeno altre 6 galassie: NGC 3313, NGC 3335, IC 2589, IC 2594, ESO 501-1 e ESO 501-62.[4]

NGC 3331 e tutte le galassie del Gruppo di NGC 3313 fanno parte dell'Ammasso dell'Idra (Abell 1060),[5] che è l'ammasso dominante del Superammasso dell'Idra-Centauro.[6]
