Il minerale prende il nome da Wilhelm Maucher (1879–1930)[4], rivenditore di minerali tedesco.[1]

Il minerale si trova insieme ad altri solfuri ed arseniuri di nichel.[1] ed arseniuri di cobalto.[3]
