Margherita di Brunswick-Lüneburg

Margherita di Brunswick-Lüneburg (Celle, 6 aprile 1573 – Celle, 7 agosto 1643) fu una principessa del Brunswick-Lüneburg e duchessa di Sassonia-Coburgo.

Biografia

Era figlia del duca di Brunswick-Lüneburg Guglielmo e della principessa Dorotea di Danimarca. Suo nonno materno fu infatti il re Cristiano III di Danimarca.

Venne data in sposa in seconde nozze al duca Giovanni Casimiro di Sassonia-Coburgo, che sposò il 16 settembre 1599 a Coburgo. I carri utilizzati per il corteo nuziale sono tuttora conservati e sono tra i più antichi al mondo ancora funzionanti.

In occasione del matrimonio Giovanni Casimiro fece coniare una moneta con sopra incisi lui e Margherita insieme con la scritta "Wie küssen sich die zwei so fein" mentre sull'altra faccia compariva una suora con la scritta "Wer küsst mich armes Nünnelein". Si trattava della prima moglie del duca, Anna di Sassonia, trovata adultera ed in seguito arrestata, ripudiata e rinchiusa in convento[1].

Il matrimonio di Margherita risultò felice ma, il primo, rimase senza figli.

Con la morte di Giovanni Casimiro nel 1633 il ducato di Sassonia-Coburgo perse la sua indipendenza e venne ereditato dal fratello Giovanni Ernesto duca di Sassonia-Eisenach.
