La sottana di ferro (The Iron Petticoat) è un film del 1956 diretto da Ralph Thomas.

Trama

Una donna pilota sovietica piomba a bordo del suo Mig in una base aerea statunitense, portandovi lo scompiglio. Rigida e priva di senso dell'umorismo, la donna mette a dura prova un ufficiale messole alle costole dal comandante della base per sorvegliarla con la scusa di farle da chaperon. I due, alla fine, però capiranno di amarsi e la donna riuscirà a lasciare l'Unione Sovietica - dove era ritornata - per convolare a nozze con l'amato capitalista.

Produzione

Il ruolo maschile che doveva in origine essere assegnato a Cary Grant, venne affidato a Bob Hope: fu l'unico flop al botteghino nella carriera dell'attore.

Il film uscì nelle sale il 7 gennaio 1957, in piena guerra fredda.

Critica

«Senza l'antecedente di «Ninotchka» il famoso film di Lubitsch interpretato dalla Garbo, difficilmente si sarebbe avuto questo Sottana di ferro («Iron Petticoat») che in toni più facili e caricati ne ripete l'assunto satirico-sentimentale. Diretto a colori dall'abile Ralph Thomas e sceneggiato dall'anche più abile Ben Hecht [...] è da notare che l'abbinamento di due interpreti d'educazione e tempra così diverse quali la intellettuale Hepburn e il facile Hope, non stride, anzi sprizza interna comicità, così da costituire il più allettante motivo del film, che tenendosi ugualmente lontano dal peregrino e dal volgare, strappa molti sorrisi e non poche risatine. Saporito il dialogo, che è spesso un fuoco incrociato di barzellette e «bons mots» della miglior lega hollywoodiana, e confacenti alla fastosità dello spettacolo, il vistavision e i colori.»
