John F. Hall

John Franklin Hall, anche conosciuto come John F. Hall (Jacksonville, 14 aprile 195114 marzo 2023), è stato uno storico statunitense, professore di lettere classiche e storia antica alla Brigham Young University, specialista della Roma di età augustea e di etruscologia.

Biografia

Nato a Jacksonville, in Florida, il 14 aprile 1951, Hall conseguì il B.A. alla Brigham Young University, con una doppia specializzazione in latino e greco, il M.A. alla Princeton University e il Ph.D. all'Università della Pennsylvania, dove fu allievo di R. E. A. Palmer.[1][2]

Professore alla Brigham Young University, dove fu titolare della Eliza R. Snow University Fellowship e diresse per un periodo il dipartimento di Humanities, Classics and Comparative Literature, si occupò principalmente della storia romana dall'epoca etrusca al principato di Augusto.[2] Il suo lavoro più noto è lo studio sui giochi secolari augustei e i loro antecedenti etruschi, pubblicato nella collana Aufstieg und Niedergang der römischen Welt (ANRW). Scrisse su svariati argomenti, spesso dedicati a figure della storia romana di origine etrusca: propose, tra l'altro, che il poeta Virgilio avesse ascendenze etrusche.[1]

Fu presidente della Classical Association of the Middle West and South (CAMWS) nel 1997-1998, dopo esserne stato segretario-tesoriere dal 1990 al 1996.[3] Ebbe un ruolo determinante nell'organizzazione della mostra inaugurale del Museum of Art della Brigham Young University, The Etruscans, che esponeva reperti della collezione etrusca dei Musei Vaticani e alla quale collaborò come consulente l'etruscologa Nancy T. de Grummond. In relazione alla mostra Hall curò il volume Etruscan Italy (1996), con contributi di storici di Roma, etruscologi e docenti della BYU.[1]

Membro della Chiesa di Gesù Cristo dei santi degli ultimi giorni, fu anche autore di studi sul cristianesimo delle origini in prospettiva mormone, tra cui Charting the New Testament, Masada and the World of the New Testament e New Testament Witnesses of Christ: Peter, John, James, and Paul, dedicato alle «colonne del cristianesimo primitivo». Curò inoltre Apostles and Bishops in Early Christianity, ricavato dagli appunti delle lezioni del suo maestro Hugh Nibley, che Hall riordinò, editò e annotò per la pubblicazione, e fu tra i curatori del BYU New Testament Commentary, per il quale scrisse anche il volume dedicato al Vangelo secondo Giovanni.[1]

Morì il 14 marzo 2023, dopo una breve malattia.[1]
