Faustolo

Faustolo (in latino Faustulus) è un personaggio della mitologia romana. Egli era uno dei guardiani di pecore del luogo nei pressi del Tevere.^[1]

Storia

Secondo la tradizione romana Faustolo, un pastore di Amulio, trovò i gemelli Romolo e Remo abbandonati in una cesta; portati i due infanti nella propria capanna, con la moglie Acca Larenzia decisero di crescerli come figli propri.^[1]^[2]^[3]^[4]

I bambini crebbero inizialmente nella capanna di Faustolo e Larenzia, situata sulla sommità del Palatino, alla sommità delle scale di Caco; ^[5]fu Faustolo a svelare a Romolo le loro nobili origini.^[6]

Nel racconto di Plutarco, Faustolo morì nello stesso episodio in cui fu ucciso Remo.

«Quando Remo si rese conto che il fratello si era preso gioco di lui, si sdegnò e mentre Romolo stava scavando il fossato con il quale aveva intenzione di circondare le mura della città, si fece beffe del suo lavoro e cercò di ostacolarlo. Infine varcò il fossato, ma cadde colpito in quello stesso punto, secondo alcuni dal medesimo Romolo, secondo altri da un compagno di Romolo, Celere. Nella rissa caddero anche Faustolo e Plistino, che si dice era fratello di Faustolo e aveva contribuito ad allevare Romolo e Remo.»

Faustolo fu poi seppellito presso l'allora Comizio, nel luogo dove fu ucciso.^[7]

Successivamente una famiglia romana si vantava di discendere da Faustolo, e coniò una moneta che mostra il pastore con in braccio i due gemelli e la lupa. Sextus Pompeius Fostlus emise un denario d'argento, intorno al 140 a.C., che mostrava, sul retro, i gemelli mentre erano allattati da una lupa, con il pastore Faustolo alla loro sinistra.
