Eleanor Foraker

Eleanor Foraker (Kenton, 2 settembre 1930 – Felton, 8 dicembre 2011) è stata un'artigiana e sarta statunitense.

Eleanor Foraker nel 1964 entrò alla International Latex Corporation (ILC) di Dover[1], inizialmente nella divisione Playtex, dove iniziò cucendo coperture per pannolini in tessuto.[2]

L’azienda, specializzata in materiali elastici e aderenti, partecipò al bando NASA per le tute spaziali del Programma Apollo.[3] Successivamente Foraker fu promossa supervisore di cucitura e guidò un’équipe di sarte che, in tre anni realizzò le tute spaziali A7L per Apollo 11. Tra le sue innovazioni introdusse spille colorate per identificare il lavoro di ogni sarta al fine di prevenire errori.[4]

Ha anche cucito insieme il sistema airbag che è stato utilizzato per far atterrare il rover Sojourner su Marte per la missione Pathfinder.[5]

Il libro di Nicholas de Monchaux, Spacesuit: Fashioning Apollo, pubblicato nel 2011, descrive in dettaglio la realizzazione della tuta spaziale A7L e riconosce il ruolo delle sarte nella sua creazione.[6]

Foraker ha ispirato il libro per bambini The Spacesuit: how a seamstress helped put a man on the moon (2019) di Alison Donald.[7]
