La diocesi di La Crosse (in latino: Dioecesis Crossensis) è una sede della Chiesa cattolica negli Stati Uniti d'America suffraganea dell'arcidiocesi di Milwaukee. Nel 2021 contava 163.600 battezzati su 917.654 abitanti. È retta dal vescovo Gerard William Battersby.

Territorio

La diocesi si estende nella parte nord-occidentale dello stato del Wisconsin e comprende le contee di Adams, Buffalo, Chippewa, Clark, Crawford, Dunn, Eau Claire, Jackson, Juneau, La Crosse, Marathon, Monroe, Pepin, Pierce, Portage, Richland, Trempealeau, Vernon e Wood.

Sede vescovile è la città di La Crosse, dove si trova la cattedrale di San Giuseppe Lavoratore (St. Joseph the Workman). Nella stessa città sorge anche il santuario di Nostra Signora di Guadalupe.

Il territorio si estende su 39.037 km² ed è suddiviso in 159 parrocchie.

Storia

La diocesi è stata eretta il 3 marzo 1868 con il breve Summi apostolatus di papa Pio IX[1], ricavandone il territorio dalla diocesi di Milwaukee (oggi arcidiocesi).[2]

Il 12 febbraio 1875 è entrata a far parte della provincia ecclesiastica dell'arcidiocesi di Milwaukee.

Il 3 maggio 1905 e il 22 dicembre 1945 ha ceduto porzioni del suo territorio a vantaggio dell'erezione rispettivamente delle diocesi di Superior e di Madison.
